READ the example | Title & author: Gone With The Wind, by Margaret Mitchell; genre: Historical Fiction Scarlett didn't pay attention to the rules, but tattled on her sisters. The battle for Atlanta was very exciting. I could feel the heat of the summer and hear the roar of the guns outside the city. The burning of the city was scary. Scarlett would do ANYTHING to save her home in the country. Picking cotton was not supposed to be done by respectable ladies. Scarlett was in love with her brother-in-law, Ashley (not good). Scarlett owned her own business when most women were just at home, cooking & cleaning & sewing. She was not popular with the other ladies in Atlanta. I wish Scarlett would have realized that she really loved someone else, instead of Ashley. |

Tips to remember | Make notes about the 5 short things you want to say about your book (see above). Don't give away the good parts! But do say enough to get someone interested. Do you like the book's style? Was it funny and sad at the same time? or action, action action? Let your reader know. Write like you are talking to your best friend. Say if the book made you laugh, or cry, or frustrated & why (without giving away the surprises!) |
Challenges | Make sure to include some of the major setting in the book. Is it in a city? In another time period? During a season? Describe the main characters. What kind of attitude does he have? is he happy? Serious? Selfish? Caring? What does he like to do? Is he brave? Shy? Clumsy? Use an example in your description. Don't give away the best parts!!!! Tell only enough to get your reader interested. |
Revise | First, write down your ideas. Then go back and revise. Did you say too much? Too little? Do you need a quote from a character? Did you use examples when possible? |
