Big 6 Research Method

1.1. Define the problem

1.2 Identify the information requirements

Note: steps 1.1 and 1.2 are generated by students

Research information and use it to support your opinion on one of two issues: cyber bullying or antibiotics in farm animals. Write an essay, citing this information, to express your opinion.

Cyber bullying: Cyber bullying: Why is cyber bullying so effective? What motivates a cyber bully? What are the techniques for cyber bullying? What types of reactions do people have when harassed by cyber bullies? Does it cause fatalities?

Why does cyber bullying have more of an effect than face to face interactions? How can a victim escape the bullies? How can a person deal with cyber bullies? What technology or other methods can allow people to protect themselves? Why do some people allow themselves to be bullied? How can cyber bullying be stopped?

Antibiotics for farm animals: Why are they used in the first place? How does it affect the farm animals- does it affect immune systems? Does it cause deformities?  Do the antibiotics affect humans? What is the difference between animals that do have antibiotics and those who don’t? Do we overuse antibiotics in farm animals? What would happen if they were not used? Does it affect animal growth?

How much money do the antibiotics cost? Would the sale cost of the animal go up or down if the antibiotics were not used? Why are livestock producers opposing the limitation of antibiotics? Why are we worried about the overuse of antibiotics?  Is there an alternative to antibiotics that does not affect humans negatively?

2.1 Determine kinds of sources

2.2 Prioritize sources

Books, Internet, databases, newspapers, tv (news)

Books: have older, but more carefully researched, information

Databases: current and reliable information - depending on your topic, may be too limited

Internet: more current information, but need to be careful; look for credentials

3.1 Locate actual resources

3.2 Locate information

Books: 300's for social issues; 600's for science information; 900's for country or historical information

Databases:CQ Researcher, Facts on File Modern History, Wilson Web, Gale

Internet: Google, but be sure to credential your source

Remember that you are required to have 3 academically acceptable sources, the first one being the original article from the Post-Standard. You may not have more than 5 sources in total.

4.1 Engage (read, view, interview)

4.2 Extract (make notes)

Take notes electronically, making sure to capture info for citation.

Citation generator

HINT: make your citations as you go along. Keep the generator open as you research.

You are responsible for the accuracy of your citation, the database vendor. 85% OF THE CITATIONS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DATABASE ARTICLES ARE WRONG.

5.1 Organize information

5.2 Present information

The Works Cited page will be the last page of your paper. It is NOT a seperate document. Make your Works Cited page BEFORE you write your paper.

Make sure that your Works Cited page follows MLA formatting: 1" margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, with resources in alphabetical order in hanging format.

Be careful to use MS Word View>Header and Footer for the pagination (2003). For 2007, use INSERT tab, insert the HEADER, type your last name and then use INSERT>PAGE NUMBER>CURRENT POSITION for the page number. Don't forget to check the font (TNR 12pt), and right align.

Use proper MLA date formatting:

Heading: 21 October 2010

Citation: 21 Oct 2010

REMINDER: NO encyclopedia entries are acceptable as sources.

6.1 Judge the product

6.2 Judge the process

Did you cite everything that needed citing? did you check your grammar and spelling? Do you have clear and precise sentences?

What did you learn about your topic? What did you learn about research?
