Researching at CBA Markert Library

CBA uses the Big6 research process. Developed in Syracuse during the 1980's, the Big6 breaks the process into 6 distinct linear steps:

  Task Definition
  Information Seeking Strategies
  Locating and Accessing Information
  Use of Information
  Synthesis
  Evaluation

Why teach the Big6?

Most students assume that if they can open Google and type a search question, they know how to research. However, research is a reasoning process; using a search engine is only one step of that process. Skipping over the steps of task definition and brainstorming resources leads to shallow results.

Colleges and employers across the United States are concerned about the lack of depth in the work they see from young adults who have not been trained to be information literate. At CBA, information literacy training starts from the first project in 7th grade, and continues throughout the student's career.
