Big 6 Research Method

1.1. Define the problem

1.2 Identify the information requirements

Find information to teach a class about either the Awakening or a Kate Chopin short story.

Include info on:

Plot, setting, tone, mood, characters, metaphors, historical context (social attitudes), allusions

You must have a minimum of 12 passages from the book OR 1 per short story with clarification. Include your interpretation and feelings.

PRODUCT: Power Point that will be used to teach the lesson, with a printout of the slides + an MLA page for all sources, including Chopin's writings.

2.1 Determine kinds of sources

2.2 Prioritize sources

Primary sources: Kate Chopin's writings

Secondary sources: Literary criticism, historical data

3.1 Locate actual resources

3.2 Locate information

Books: Chopin's works, literary criticism

Databases: Twayne's author series (Gale); Facts on File American History for historical info.

Internet: Google books for Chopin's writings, sites from English professors

4.1 Engage (read, view, interview)

4.2 Extract (make notes)

Make notes electronically; use EasyBib to create Works Cited page.

5.1 Organize information

5.2 Present information

The Works Cited page will be the last page of your paper.

Make sure that your Works Cited page follows MLA formatting: 1" margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, with resources in alphabetical order in hanging format.

Be careful to use MS Word View>Header and Footer for the pagination.

Use proper MLA date formatting:

Heading: 21 October 2010

Citation: 21 Oct 2010

REMINDER: NO encyclopedia entries are acceptable as sources.

6.1 Judge the product

6.2 Judge the process

Did you plan carefully to fill an entire period with your lesson?

What did you learn about Chopin? About teaching?
