Big 6 Research Method

1.1. Define the problem

1.2 Identify the information requirements

Timeline of Environmental Legislation:  Publications, Treaties and Protocols

For this project, you and a partner will be constructing a timeline of environmental policy for an indicated time period.  There are certain components for this project which will be standard and certain components which will allow for some creativity.

  1.   All timelines must be constructed on letter sized paper (“normal” 8.5 x 11 inch paper), set to landscape mode, with a line running across the middle paper from left to right.  The line must be a thick black line.
  2.  You must use a minimum of two sheets but a maximum of three, to construct your timeline.
  3.  All dates (“years”) must be typed near or on the black line in timeline fashion.

Each timeline shall include:

  • Names and dates of environmental treaties or protocols (minimum of 10) enacted during the time given with a brief typed explanation of the meaning of the legislation
  • In parentheses after the written explanation declare if the legislation was US or International
  • Name and dates of two governmental agencies or environmentalist groups formed during the time period and a statement of the intent of the organization
  • Names and dates of at least two major environmental conferences held during the time period and a sentence explaining who was invited to, and who actually attended, the conference
  • Names and dates of at least two publications written during the time period, the author or author’s name and a brief statement of the publication’s intent
  • An image, graph, chart or picture of something that offers meaningful explanation of the nature of each piece of legislation, organization, conference or publication
Each timeline may use whatever word-processing or software tools which work best for you, but no video clips may be included since the timelines will be hard copy.  They should be complete with all requirements fulfilled, correct with respect to grammar and spelling and creative in appearance
A properly done works cited page (at least four references) will be attached at the end so be sure to keep a list of resources used.

Legislation topics may include (but are not limited to):

pollution, toxic substances, population issues, consumption of resources, biodiversity, urbanization, human health, oceans, climate, forests, endangered species, biotechnology, energy use, desertification, coral reefs, human rights, agriculture, mining, etc.

You are responsible for the accuracy of your citation, not the generator or the database vendor.

5.1 Organize information

5.2 Present information

The Works Cited page will be the last page of your paper.

Make sure that your Works Cited page follows MLA formatting: 1" margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, with resources in alphabetical order in hanging format.

Be careful to use MS Word Insert>Header and Footer for the pagination.

Use proper MLA date formatting:

Heading: 21 October 2010

REMINDER: NO encyclopedia entries are acceptable as sources.
