Big 6 Research Method

1.1. Define the problem

1.2 Identify the information requirements

Keeping in mind the 2 essay questions, need information regarding 2 failed expeditions.

Why failed –illness? lack of supplies? inadequate nutrition?  inadequate preparation physically? Arrogance? Were there fatalities in the expedition? Was the expedition abandoned? What part did weather play in the failure? Was there bad leadership? Was there proper navigation? Was there sufficient communication? Was the equipment suited to the expedition? Was the technology at the time up to the challenge? What physical evidence was left from the failed expedition?

Motivation for expedition – glory, freedom from society’s expectations, self worth & prove themselves, excitement (fun), money, scientific discovery

Format: text, map, picture, video or audio files

2.1 Determine kinds of sources

2.2 Prioritize sources

Internet, databases, books

For recent expeditions, databases will have newspaper articles that may contain descriptions and/or interviews of the expedition and members.

For historical expeditions, books and the historical databases will be helpful.

The Internet can be used but be sure to use credentialed sources.

3.1 Locate actual resources

3.2 Locate information

Books: 910

Databases: Ancient and Medieval History, Modern History, Gale, Wilson Web

Internet: Google. Individuals will need to be well known (Greg Mortensen, Sir Edmund Hilary) and have extensive experience in order to be considered credentialed. Also look for corporate sponsorship of the expedition.

NO ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLES.

You need at least 3, but not more than 5 sources.

4.1 Engage (read, view, interview)

4.2 Extract (make notes)

Take notes electronically, making sure to capture info for citation.

Citation generator

You are responsible for the accuracy of your citation, not the generator or the database vendor.

5.1 Organize information

5.2 Present information

Set up the body of your paper correctly.

The Works Cited page will be the last page of your paper.

Make sure that your Works Cited page follows MLA formatting: 1" margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, with resources in alphabetical order in hanging format.

Be careful to use MS Word View>Header and Footer for the pagination.

Use proper MLA date formatting:

Heading: 21 October 2009

Citation: 21 Oct 2009

REMINDER: NO general encyclopedia entries (World Book, Britannica, Columbia, etc.) are acceptable as sources.

6.1 Judge the product

6.2 Judge the process

Did you answer the two questions in the assignment? Did you use examples from your research to emphasize your points in answering the questions?

What did you learn about choosing resources? About credentialing websites?
