Big 6 Research Method

1.1. Define the problem

1.2 Identify the information requirements

(scope generated by students)

Find information for a travelogue for a character you create, based from 1865 to 1914 in America. Describe your eyewitness accounts of people and events in America during this time.

Events:  Reconstruction plans, exploring the west, major elections, range wars

Technology: travel (boat, rail, horse), clothing manufacturing, industrialism, agriculture

Ethnic groups: Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican, Irish, Asian, German, Russian, Scandinavian, Italian

Daily life: food, shelter, entertainment, slang, tobacco use, fashion, cooking, hygiene, art, religion

Product: make a journal or diary, with decorated covers, and “photos” inside, with a map of your journey and character’s family tree. Also collect 3-4 “souvenirs” that can fit into a container appropriate to the time (leather bag, wooden box, etc.)

Due Thursday, Dec 20.

Be aware that databases must be cited differently than just websites: don't confuse a database with a website!!! The MLA is very different.

For Facts on File and ABC-CLIO, select "Article published by database."
